MS JOANNE ISBISTER

  

Joanne is currently employed as a certified Genetic Counsellor at the Genomics Medicine and Familial Cancer Clinic at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. She completed a Bachelor in Medical Science (BMedSci) at Latrobe University, prior to completing a post-graduate studies in genetic counselling. She has 15 + years’ experience as a clinical genetic counsellor in the fields of perinatal and adult genetics. She completed the Summer School in Brain Disorders course offered by the MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetic and Genomics Centre, Cardiff University and published her study exploring Australian genetic counsellors’ experience and attitudes towards psychiatric genetic in 2023 . She was awarded the RMH JL Frew Travel fellowship, which provided her with the opportunity to travel to Canada to further develop her skills and knowledge in psychiatric genomics and genetic counselling. Identifying a significant gap in local services, Joanne is developing a service to meet the needs of this underserved patient group, and ultimately would like to see individuals (and their families) receive equitable access to expert psychiatric genetic counselling and services in Australia.
